1. How to determine if the compressor motor is grounded due to contact with the casing?
Use the resistance setting on a multimeter. Place one probe firmly against the common terminal, and the other probe on the exposed metal part of the compressor process pipe, or remove a small portion of the paint on the casing for contact. If the resistance reading is very low, it indicates that the winding or internal wiring is making contact with the casing, causing grounding.
2. How to determine if the compressor motor winding is open?
Set the multimeter to resistance mode and connect the probes to any two winding terminals to measure the resistance. If the reading shows infinite resistance, meaning there is no continuity between the two winding terminals, the winding can be considered open.
3. What should be checked if the compressor does not start?
Check if the compressor overload protection, pressure switch, or overcurrent protector has tripped or is damaged. Inspect the indoor temperature sensor and pipe sensor for open circuits or poor contact. Also, check if the relay is engaged, if the compressor is open or short-circuited, and if the compressor capacitor is faulty.
4. What causes the compressor to overheat and stop shortly after starting?
Possible causes include insufficient or excessive refrigerant, blockage in the capillary tube assembly, internal leakage in the four-way valve, compressor issues such as short circuits, open circuits, or grounding due to contact with the casing. Additionally, high pressure might trigger the pressure relay. Other factors include poor ventilation or airflow short-circuiting in the condenser, the presence of non-condensable gases in the system, excessively high ambient temperature around the outdoor unit, or the compressor experiencing cylinder seizure or shaft jamming.
