Why Oil Return Bends are Essential in Refrigeration Systems: Key Situations and Solutions

Why Is an Oil Return Bend Necessary in Refrigeration Systems?

In refrigeration systems, an oil return bend is essential when there is a significant vertical height difference in the piping. This bend ensures that the compressor oil can effectively return to the compressor, preventing potential damage to the compressor and extending its lifespan.

When Is an Oil Return Bend Required?

1. When the Main Unit is Higher than the Evaporator:
If the evaporator is lower than the main unit, there will be a vertical riser between the evaporator and the main suction pipe. Since refrigerant oil doesn't evaporate within the evaporator, it accumulates at the bottom. If too much oil accumulates, it could block the suction pipe, disrupting the system's functionality.

To prevent this, an oil return bend is installed at the bottom of the evaporator. The oil will accumulate in this bend instead of the suction pipe. Once the bend starts to fill, the pressure difference on both ends of the pipe will pump the oil out and back into the horizontal suction pipe at the top. From there, the oil is naturally returned to the compressor.

2. When Concerned About the Length of the Vertical Riser:
If the vertical riser is too long, the oil might not be able to reach the top. To address this, you can install an oil return bend at regular intervals along the vertical riser, such as every 4 meters. This allows the oil to gradually return to the main unit in stages, ensuring it doesn't accumulate and block the system.
