When it comes to efficiency and green energy, a handful of technologies (solar, geothermal....) capture most of the attention; so I'd like to share a view techniques that fly under the radar.

#1 Energy recovery wheels

Many buildings, especially health-care facilities, require lots of fresh air to be brought in - all the air the building is changed several times per hour. Heating and humidifying this air consumes more natural gas than anything other heating load.

One of the most elegant solutions is the energy recovery wheel. Turning slowly, it captures heat and humidity from "stale" air leaving the building, and transfers it to the incoming cold air.

Here's some photos of an energy wheel that I installed recently. The wheel itself fit nicely in the new air handling unit, but the challenge was ducting the exhaust air from all over the roof!
